The "Wayang Golek" project utilized Adobe Illustrator for precision and control in crafting vector graphics, including color blocking to capture vibrant hues and detailed pattern design for intricate motifs. The strong typographical elements were carefully chosen. The design process was iterative, involving several rounds of feedback and refinement to preserve the puppet's unique attributes while encapsulating the cultural richness of traditional Indonesian art.
The most challenging part of the "Wayang Golek" project was merging traditional Indonesian art with contemporary graphic design while maintaining cultural integrity. Balancing the historical and social perspectives of Wayang Golek with modern aesthetics required careful research and thoughtful design choices. Externally, ensuring the designs could be produced in various formats without losing quality was a technological challenge. However, using Adobe Illustrator allowed this versatility, providing the designs maintained their vibrancy and detail across platforms.
The project started and finished in the summer of 2022 and was exhibited in 2022 West Java.
The "Wayang Golek" series, as digital artwork, is interacted with primarily visually. Viewers can explore the vibrant color palette, intricate patterns, and strong typography that echo traditional Indonesian art. While rooted in tradition, the designs are presented in a contemporary style, making them relatable to a modern audience. This fusion of old and new enhances viewer engagement, fostering an appreciation for Wayang Golek. The digital format also ensures easy sharing and display across various platforms and devices, improving accessibility and interaction.
Cultural and design research was conducted for the "Wayang Golek" series. The objective was to understand Wayang Golek's historical and cultural significance and how to translate these elements into modern graphic design. The methodology involved a literature review, a visual analysis of traditional Indonesian art, and a study of Wayang Golek's performances. Adobe Illustrator was the primary tool used for design creation. The designs were shared with a test audience, which included young Indonesian and international viewers, to gauge response. The positive feedback affirmed the project's success in making Wayang Golek more relatable to a modern audience. This approach could inspire similar projects, bridging the gap between traditional art forms and contemporary design.
