Church and Community Hub for Brevity Studios
TPA Church and Community Center is designed as a space for both church members to worship; and community to gather, interact and learn. The project is brought to life through the informal corridor and pocket spaces where users mingle and create their own activities. The design features of the project are filled with subtle Christian and biblical motifs so that users can experience the space with a sense of adventure – to discover the meaning of its designs and features while connecting these discoveries with the knowledge of their faith.

The ethos of this church is as much a congregation for worship as well as a community to serve and help the neighborhood. Their venue situated in Kowloon, Hong Kong, is designed to break away from a traditional space that is only used during worship, but a space that is open for the community to gather, interact and learn. The layout has three zones - Worship, Community, and Youth. The Community and Youth spaces include study areas, pantries, therapy room, and activity and meeting rooms.

The feature wall shelf was designed to sculpturally resemble a tree canopy with functional seating and bar tables along its length. It was designed using parametric modelling tools and constructed from birch plywood. CNC cutting was used extensively to ensure that each piece of the geometry was fabricated as intended and interlocked securely.
A challenge of this project was liaising with a large committee of members with different priorities; and combining their requirements into a cohesive design.
The project is located in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. Design commenced in May 2018 and construction was completed in Jan 2019.
The shape of project site is long and linear with the large formal spaces (i.e. worship hall, activity hall, small meeting rooms, and offices) evenly distributed across the floor plan. What brings the project to life is not the design of the formal spaces but rather the informal ‘corridor’ and ‘foyer’ spaces where visitors mingle and create their own activities.
Understanding of two different types of primary functions was required for this project – traditional church for Sunday worship and communal spaces found in lounges or co-working offices. Some research was also done for biblical stories to inform the more decorative features within the design.
The team drew inspiration from biblical stories and motifs, applying them subtly to the design of the venue. We wanted users to experience the space with a sense of adventure – to discover the meaning of its designs and features while connecting these discoveries with the knowledge of their faith.
