Design Challenge
The creative challenge centered on merging a mat and scale into a cohesive unit, ensuring comfort and accuracy, especially in pre/post-shower contexts. Internally, we tackled perceptions of scales within daily routines, designing for user comfort and precise measurements despite the mat overlay. Externally, we navigated production constraints and technological limits to enable AI to learn from user data and offer actionable health advice. Overcoming these obstacles involved innovative material use and advanced algorithms, ensuring the Odin scale offers a seamless, intuitive experience and smart, personalized health insights.

Operation Flow
The Odin Scale integrates touch activation, moisture detection, and AI analysis for an unmatched user experience. It vibrates to signal start and completion, with moisture detection ensuring accuracy by distinguishing between dry and wet conditions. The scale measures 21 body compositions in 20 seconds, and its AI component offers personalized meal and workout plans based on the data collected, elevating its performance beyond traditional scales. This combination of precision measurement, intelligent moisture awareness, and AI-driven health optimization provides users with a comprehensive health management tool.
Research
Our study engaged 202 participants, conducting 200 surveys and 40 in-depth interviews. We found that 75% preferred aesthetically adaptable, larger scales for enhanced comfort. Moreover, 65% reported avoidance of weight checks due to anxiety. Addressing these insights, we developed a scale that 90% found visually appealing and user-friendly, reducing scale avoidance among 70% of participants. Importantly, our design also catered to the 80% seeking easy storage solutions. This led to a notable increase in regular health monitoring among users, showcasing our design’s impact in promoting a healthier lifestyle and altering the market landscape to prioritize user-centric wellness tools.
Inspiration
The genesis of this project was rooted in the realization that traditional bathroom scales have remained largely unchanged for years, both in functionality and design. This stagnation sparked a curiosity: Could we reimagine the humble bathroom scale to better fit modern lifestyles and aesthetics? The inspiration came from observing that most scales on the market predominantly feature black and white designs, making it challenging to integrate them seamlessly into diverse home environments. Additionally, the existing market, dominated by products not tailored for Western users, often presents scales that are too small, overlooking the comfort and practicality needed for everyday use. Another motivating factor was the psychological aspect of using a scale. Many people hesitate to use scales regularly due to fear of confronting changes in their body condition. This observation led to the thought: What if a scale could be more than just a measuring device? What if it could be an encouraging partner in one’s wellness journey? Moreover, the practicality of storing a scale in homes, especially in bathrooms with limited space, was a significant consideration. Many people find themselves needing to take out or move their scale each time they use it, which can be a barrier to regular use. Inspired by these insights, the project aimed to create a scale that not only addresses the aesthetic and size limitations of current products but also transforms the scale into a supportive wellness tool. This led to the development of a design that is versatile enough to fit beautifully into any room, encouraging regular, anxiety-free interaction and making health monitoring an integrated part of daily life, without the hassle of storage issues. This design philosophy aims to shift the narrative from avoidance to engagement, making wellness accessible and inviting for everyone.
