Calmspace, a mobile design addressing technology-induced anxiety in young adults, employs a freemium model, providing free well-being features for self-focus and group activities. The innovative reward program encourages users to learn about digital anxiety, earn credits through quizzes and inviting friends for free sessions, and track well-being performance in the profile dashboard. Calmspace aims to enhance happiness, and natural, proactive interaction for a healthier digital lifestyle.

The most challenging aspect of developing the Calmspace concept was delineating the user group while recognizing technical limitations. In the research phase, I assumed that the ideal users for Calmspace would be individuals aged 18 to 30, encompassing both students and industry professionals in sectors with ready access to digital technologies.
The project started in February 2022, with iterations and finished in April 2022 in New York City, USA. Several rounds of iterations and usability testing continued to be conducted after the completion of the design prototypes.
First-time user begins with three-step onboarding where Calmspace offers a guided introduction, and they land on the homepage that shows the individual activities. This is the entry point of the experience that brings people the choices of managing mental well-being through self-care or group activities. In the meantime, people are able to learn about digital anxiety topics through the Learning page, and track their performance in the Profile dashboard. Calmspace aims to bridge the dilemma between self-care and social connections, and break down the barriers of budget, location by making users at home.
How can we raise awareness of young adults' anxiety through digital tech, addressing their "always connected" concerns for well-being? I defined Calmspace's user group, analyzed market trends, and conducted secondary research on anxiety, particularly during the pandemic. Surveys, interviews, and the exploration of similar apps informed primary research, revealing insights: existing mental well-being apps focus on paid subscription for meditation, people seek disconnection from the virtual world while desiring in-person connections, and there is a need for motivation in addressing digital anxiety.
I was inspired to design Calmspace concept during pandemic. Anxiety is a common issue (1.56% increase in anxiety among young Americans) related to the "always connected" existence that most young adults find themselves. During pandemic, the limitations to physical contact "forced" them to rely heavily on phones and laptops (67% people-at-home reported increasing anxiety). Thus I want to manage people's mental well-being between using digital tech and "always socially connected" existence.
