Comic Book for Simran Tapadia
The story and design chosen by Simran are quite different yet perfect together. As seen the colours used are unique and each page has different tell to the story. She succeeded in pulling off the story in 6 spreads with the style of Van Gogh which isn't easy to pull off. The design of her text is poetic and beautiful, not too heavy and not to light. It is perfectly balanced and placed. Each page has a different emotion and colour or mood to it bringing out a new fresh perspective.

The story and design chosen by Simran are quite different yet perfect together. She took up Sati's story because many of us know about Sati and how the ritual is done, but via this art style, she wanted to show the flow of emotions and thoughts of the lady. She has captured the essence of the whole ritual and makes the reader feel the moment of "awe" No one has ever thought of Sati in a Van Gogh art style or seen Van Gogh in storytelling form.

She started creating this in October 2018, started by dividing the story into 12 parts. The challenge was to make the flow of the story and the art style since Van Gogh has a very unique style and flow of the brush. But the most fun part was adding colors to the storyboard, even though this was done digitally, her love for colors is shown in each page.
The main challenge was the use of right colors and last spread storyboarding.
I started creating this in October 2018 and finished in December 2018
Its a comic book with splash page art works and poetic text.
Research started by looking for real-life Sati experiences or stories. Read about families which have witnessed Sati. After a lot of research, she came across the diary of the British officer who wrote his experience of Sati. She started with storyboarding, and she wanted it to be splash pages because they have a different feel to it. The fun part was finding the right color for the pages and how to show a flow of story and emotions from one page to another.
She was inspired by my Indian culture and religious beliefs. India has such a diverse culture and history so she wanted to put forth one of the traditions across the viewers in a different way. Decided to take up the topic of Sati. We all have seen illustrations of Sati and how it's performed, but she wanted to take a different turn and show the other side of it. The colors and the emotions expressed in each page says a lot. You'll feel the pain the women went through back in those times. The sacrifices they made at the cost of RELIGION.
