The apartment is located on the south eastern coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong, surrounded by mountains and the beautiful South China Sea. Its serenity views and slow pace of life has inspired the team the Five Elements Theory, a Chinese philosophy used to describe interactions and relationships between wood, fire, metal, earth, and water. So the wooden veneer, colorful marble, and metal trimming...etc are gently blended to create the mood and bring in the vitality of nature to the interior.

The bedrooms are reconfigured and divided into a bedroom and study area with a sliding glass door for open flexibility. The functionality was further optimized by adding a storage room in the corridor. Feature walls with curated marble with distinct patterns are representing each of the five elements. Such as the bedrooms are using turquoise colors to echoes the water element. The custom made wardrobe handle designed with inwards curves is a design detail to represent a sense of water fluidity.
Marble is a natural material composed of carbonate minerals, each slab of marble will have its own unique characteristics. When we sourcing the material, our team had spent quite a long time visited various marble suppliers in Mainland China to carefully source the materials with the ideal patterns and colors that can fit perfectly into the concept yet not over-decorated in the small apartment. Also sourcing loose furniture that can echos the concept and balance between natural and luxury.
The concept development for the project is started in July 2018 and the construction is finished in February 2019 in Hong Kong.
The essence of five elements is subtly expressed in the lively palette and expertly curated by combinations of materials and furniture showcasing diverse textures and tactile sensations. First choosing light-wooden veneer and metal trimming to lay down the foundation of Earth, Metal and Wood in the apartment. Then carefully source the marbles and fabric with the ideal patterns and colors that fit perfectly into the overall concept to echoes the peaceful serenity of the apartment.
A couple of site visits with the client leads us discovered the serenity views of Discovery Bay and the client’s slow paced lifestyle. It inspired us to create an apartment that can connect with outdoor greenery, ocean, fresh air, and so forth, and the Five elements theory is in perfect harmony to bring in the natural vitality and present the lifestyle. Since the apartment is designed for the couple, we designed a massive bedroom with a study room to optimize its functionality and spaciousness.
This is a small apartment design inspired by the Five Elements Theory, blended with a composition of natural elements: wood, fire, metal, earth, and water to create a sense of soul soothing calmness in the home. The curated material like marble, textured fabric, metal trimming, and the vibrant color palette are rarely used in a small apartment yet these compositions successfully turns the apartment to become unique and personalized for the owner to escape the bustle of the city life.
